“Phoenix Rising is an astonishing score. I have no hesitation in saying that it’s the most resourceful and imaginative contemporary orchestral work that I’ve heard in ages. The level of invention is remarkable. It’s a piece that, I find, grabs your attention from the start and never lets go. Moreover, at no time does Thea Musgrave overplay her hand. The work is concise and although there are some very fully scored passages you feel these are always there to serve their purpose; once the point has been made the composer moves on. Consequently, she says all she has to say in twenty-one minutes and the listener is left completely satisfied. The piece receives a magnificent performance from William Boughton and the BBCNOW: the work is played with great commitment and skill. Their cause is helped by the splendid, impactful recording.”

New Haven Symphony Orchestra 2018/19 Season Announced

After twelve (12) wonderful and challenging years I start my final year as Music Director of America’s fourth oldest orchestra. The 18/19 Season sees the return of Chad Hoopes in Dvorak’s rarely performed Violin Concerto coupled with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherezade, a choral splendor with over 350 voices in Orff’s ‘Carmina Burana’ Boris Berman in Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto, Thai Murray making her NHSO debut in Prokofiev’s 2nd Violin Concerto and ending with Mahler’s glorious Third Symphony.

In the Studio

In July I recorded Bernard Rand’s extraordinary orchestral song-cycle ‘Canti del sole’ with tenor Stephen Chaundy and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for Lyrita Records.

I also recently recorded Mozart’s Piano Concertos in A major K488 and Eb K365 with Robert Blocker and the Eb Double Concerto with Peter Frankl and the Yale Philharmonia—which will eventually be released on the Nimbus Alliance Label.

Latest Release – John Joubert: Symphony No 3 and Piano Concerto with Martin Jones for Lyrita Records.
